Here’s why Taylor Swift’s performance on the Tonight Show will break your heart 💔

Last night,  Taylor Swift took to the  Tonight Show stage to perform her new track ‘New Year’s Day’. But this wasn’t the in-your-face, new-badass Taylor type of performance we were expecting – in fact it was so touching the producers of the show said there wasn’t a dry eye in the studio. Even host Jimmy Fallon was in tears.

This was Jimmy Fallon’s first show after his mother passed away “peacefully” from “undisclosed causes” on November 4. Taylor Swift came forward to ask the  Tonight Show if she could perform her new ballad ‘New Year’s Day’, to which the producers “said yes with zero hesitation”.

Jimmy started off the night with a touching monologue about his mother, in which he recalled how she used to “squeeze my hand three times.” He continued: “Last week, I was in the hospital and I grabbed her hand and squeezed ‘I love you.’ I just knew we were in trouble.”

So when Taylor Swift took to the stage to sing the coincidental lyrics, “You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi;” there was not one dry eye in the audience. Describing the emotional night on Twitter, one of the producers of the show, Mike DiCenzo, praised Taylor for her performance:”Whatever you think of Taylor, she did something beautiful for Jimmy and our show today, and we’re forever grateful.”

She sang “New Year’s Day.” No one had heard it. Suddenly she sings the line, “Squeeze my hand 3 times in the back of the taxi.” I nearly gasped. Tears. I think everyone in the audience started sobbing.

I could see Jimmy silhouetted at his desk dabbing his eyes with a tissue. We all lost it. It was a beautiful coincidence in a beautiful performance. “Hold on to your memories, they will hold on to you,” Taylor sang.

That hug between Jimmy and Taylor after the song was 100% real emotion. Whatever you think of Taylor, she did something beautiful for Jimmy and our show today, and we’re forever grateful.
