Marc Jacobs presented his final show for Louis Vuitton this morning (02.10.13).
The 50-year-old designer, who is leaving the upmarket brand after 16 years as Creative Director, offered up a sombre swansong featuring mostly black pieces with his spring/summer 2014 collection at Paris Fashion Week.
The elegant garments were set against an extravagant backdrop boasting a number of iconic memorabilia from his previous Louis Vuitton shows, including old fashioned caged hotel elevators, a carousel, a fountain and a hallway of hotel room doors.
Backstage before the runway presentation, Marc, his business partners Robert Duffy and LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault confirmed his departure to website WWD.com.
It is believed he will now be focussing on his own eponymous collection, Marc by Marc Jacobs.
Marc has helped Louis Vuitton expand its lucrative empire, with the brand bringing in seven billion euros a year, half of luxury goods conglomerate LVMH’s – which also owns Givenchy, Pucci, Moët & Chandon, Christian Dior perfumes and cosmetics, and Bulgari watches – operating profits.
Before he transformed the French fashion house, the company was known primarily for luggage and trunks.
Former Balenciaga creative director Nicholas Ghesquiere is rumoured to be in the running to replace Marc at the helm of Louis Vuitton.
