We take a look at some of the trends from the past that are making their way back to the new generation, exploring how historical silhouettes are being redefined for the contemporary fashion landscape. From the resurgence of the minimalist aesthetic popularised by Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy to the return of specific denim cuts, these revivals highlight a shift back toward coordinated and polished dressing.
The resurgence of the skirt suit: The skirt suit is another major trend reclaiming its place in modern wardrobes, moving beyond the confines of traditional office wear. Modern interpretations often feature a slim or pencil skirt paired with a matching jacket, creating a cohesive and powerful silhouette.Creative Director Matthieu Blazy provided a contemporary refresh of this classic trend during his debut at Chanel. His version utilised a boxy, cropped blazer paired with a coordinating skirt, offering a youthful and avant-garde take on the classic ensemble. This revival highlights a shift back toward coordinated dressing that feels both nostalgic and distinctly modern.
Capri pants, once widely known in the early 90s as “pedal pushers,” have solidified their place as a dominant summer trend once again. During their 90s heyday, they were typically styled with cropped shirts or t-shirts and paired with either classic flats or the era’s signature platform sneakers. However, the history of this silhouette extends far beyond the 90s, tracing its roots back to the 1950s. During that decade, the style was immortalised by fashion icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, who showcased the pants’ ability to blend casual comfort with high-fashion elegance. In the contemporary fashion landscape, the trend has been revitalised by a new generation of style leaders. Celebrities including KendallJenner and Hailey Bieber have championed the look, transitioning it from a nostalgic reference into a modern staple. Today’s iterations vary from sophisticated classic black designs to playful polka dot versions, proving the enduring versatility of the cut.
The Refined silhouette: While the dominating denim trend in recent years has favoured wide-leg and high-waisted versions, the cigarette jean is steadily creeping back into our fashion consciousness. This slim-fit silhouette, which made a notable reappearance in 2025, offers a sleek alternative to more voluminous styles. Proving to be a major upcoming trend, cigarette jeans provide an effortless dressing aesthetic that remains inherently polished. When paired with low-heeled boots, a simple t-shirt, a slim belt, and a structured blazer, they create a sophisticated look suitable for various occasions. I personally do consider them a much-preferred and chic upgrade from the ultra-tight skinny jeans of previous decades.
The Minimalist aesthetic: The Caroline Bisset aesthetic has seen a significant resurgence since the premiere of the love story series detailing the relationship between John F. Kennedy Junior and his wife Carolyn. Her famed aesthetic, characterised by its understated elegance, has compelled influencers and fashion enthusiasts alike to recreate her most iconic looks. Effortless minimalist dressing was one of the defining trends of the 90sera, emphasising clean lines and neutral palettes. Carolyn’s signature style often featured slim pencil skirts paired with delicate, thin-strapped tank tops and lightweight cardigans. She was also frequently seen in cigarette jeans, a staple that embodied her polished yet relaxed approach to fashion.
