For Rihanna, basics are anything but basic. The “Umbrella” singer stepped out in staples we should all have in our capsule wardrobes, combined in a simple formula that anyone can copy. And by anyone we mean us, right now, all the time.
On May 31 she stepped out in New York City wearing three classic American must-haves: denim blue jeans, a baseball cap, and a tan trench coat. Everyone from Grace Kelly to Inspector Gadget keeps these in their closet, and if Rihanna says they go together, they go together. As the Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy mania of earlier this year showed us, to dress simply is often to dress well.
Of course, she is Rihanna, so it’s not like she’s in the Temu version of an off-duty cool girl. For starters, her Miu Miu cap appears to be a new favorite. A mere two weeks ago, she went for a late-night workout wearing the same hat, which retails for $650 online. And as you can see from the heavy gold chains snaking their way around her neck, she’s not exactly in the “just threw it on” version, either. Her dark glasses, white zip-up, tan trench, and medium-wash jeans are less immediately recognizable as being from a particular brand…and that’s exactly the point. She’s not a walking list of logos or a billboard for the next It aesthetic.
Rihanna doesn’t need to make the walk from her hotel to her car a runway—just a glimpse into her wardrobe, which, in addition to the out-there pieces she wears on special occasions, seems to be as full of high-quality classics as we always assumed. The finishing touch: the coveted Nike x Jacquemus moon shoe, $180 with a wait list. Gotta give the kids something to envy.
Anyone else get the feeling she could easily do a closet swap with Jennifer Lawrence?
