The brooch has transformed from a functional garment fastener in ancient times to a versatile fashion accessory that enhances contemporary wardrobes. As designers across the globe embrace its resurgence, brooches are now features on everything from classic blazers to casual shirts, symbolising both individuality and style.
I grew up in the 80s/90s, an era when the brooch was much more than just an accessory—it was a personal signature. I loved my grandmother’s extensive collection, a treasure trove of intricate designs. Among these, one piece stood out, the classic Cameo brooch. Every aunt, every grandmother, seemed to possess at least one. Yet, it was rarely a solitary item; the true collector displayed a small bowl filled with a dazzling variety of brooches, ready to be selected from the vanity table as the perfect finishing touch. Back then the brooch was inextricably linked with formal events. Attending church, a wedding, a significant family gathering, or any official function demanded its presence. It was a non-negotiable staple, the final element that pulled an outfit together. It was most commonly pinned strategically onto the bow of a pussy-bow blouse, or on the lapel of any structured formal blouse.
Beyond this, it provided a flash of brilliance on a tailored blazer, a heavy winter coat, or even secured a silk scarf. This small, powerful piece of jewellery was the quintessential accessory that effortlessly elevated a formal ensemble, lending an air of sophistication and polished respectability. The story of the brooch stretches back to ancient history, long before it became a purely decorative item. Its origins can be traced to the Bronze Age and the grandeur of the Roman Empire, where its function was purely utilitarian:to act as a fibula, or fastener. These ancient predecessors were essential for securing heavy woollen cloaks and tunics, effectively holding the basic garments of the era together. Naturally, as fashion evolved, so did the brooch. It found a place within the exclusive world of royalty and the aristocracy. For these elite wearers, the practical function gave way to a display of wealth and power.
Royal brooches were not merely metal; they were opulent creations, painstakingly crafted from precious metals and studded with large, flawless diamonds and rare, coveted gemstones. These magnificent pieces were reserved for the most important social engagements, such as state dinners, coronations, and elaborate society balls, serving as vivid symbols of status and lineage.Today, the brooch has experienced a spectacular resurgence, transitioning from a relic of formality to a cool fashion statement. Its appeal lies in its power to instantly elevate a contemporary look. Reflecting a fashion landscape that is significantly more relaxed than that of the 80s/90s, the modern brooch is fearlessly paired with casual staples. No longer confined to silk blouses, it now brings an unexpected element of chic to simple cotton shirts, adds sparkle to a denim jacket, or provides a focal point on a pair of classic jeans. One of the most exciting and dynamic new trends involves embracing maximalism by wearing multiple brooches simultaneously. Pinned in clusters or artful lines across a blazer lapel, this approach moves beyond subtle accenting, allowing the wearer to create a bold, personalised statement piece that is unique to them. The high-fashion runways have fully embraced this classic accessory’s comeback.
Designers globally have showcased their interpretations, celebrating its versatility and enduring charm. We see the subtle, heritage-inspired application from houses like Ralph Lauren, where small, meticulously crafted brooches are added as quiet symbols of luxury on sophisticated tweed blazers and cashmere pashminas. In stark contrast, Chanel has championed the return of the ‘statement brooch,’ offering pieces that are intentionally large, colourful, and highly decorative—loud and proud expressions of high-fashion audacity. The brooch, therefore, proves its timelessness, adapting perfectly to both minimalist elegance and extravagant display.
