How Eki Kéré is transforming African Fashion through sustainability

Eki Kéré is reshaping African fashion through sustainability and ethical practices.

The Eki Kéré brand has its roots firmly planted in the rich, diverse soil of the African continent. This Nigerian label was passionately founded by Abasiekeme Ukanireh in 2020, emerging directly out of the crucible of the global pandemic. Her initial purpose was profoundly sparked by the collective effort she witnessed: fashion designers banding together to combat the Corona virus in the most immediate way they knew—by creating essential protective masks.as people born upon this great continent, we possess an undeniable, visceral connection to its earth, its resources, and its vibrant spirit.

The conceptual birth of Eki Kéré was founded upon these deep-seated roots, intrinsically coupled with an urgent concern for environmental steward ship and sustainability. It is a brand that seeks to honour its heritage while forging a path forward that is both ethical and ecologically sound.I first encountered Abasiekeme’s distinctive work a few years ago and was immediately captivated by her unique and innovative pieces. The ensembleI had the privilege of featuring was a stunning raffia coat dress paired with a matching hat. The sheer creativity and dedication required to craft these intricate raffia pieces, ensuring they are both bold in design and exciting to wear, speaks volumes about her commitment to highlighting the natural resources and inherent beauty of her Nigerian environment. This commitment is tangible: she sources all her materials ethically and invests significantly in eco-conscious production methods, ensuring that every garment reflects her unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship and minimising the brand’s ecological footprint. Her core material is raffia which is abundant in her hometown raffia City. But Abasiekeme’s ambition and vision extend far beyond the creation of mere beautiful clothing.

She conceptualises Eki Kéré as a powerful platform for fundamental change—a dedicated space where fashion can serve as a genuine force for good, actively uplifting marginalised communities and robustly protecting the planet. With this holistic mission firmly in mind, she has established meaningful partnerships with local artisans and craft cooperatives. This collaborative model is crucial, as it empowers these skilled individuals, providing them with fair economic opportunities while simultaneously serving the vital function of preserving in valuable, age-old artisanal techniques for the benefit of future generations. Abasiekeme’s ultimate goal is to architect an entire ecosystem that is truly sustainable for all stakeholders. For the brand to survive, thrive, and for consumers to continue to live and shop in an ethical and sustainable manner, every party involved in the value chain must be fairly and adequately compensated. This core belief has manifested in concrete practices, including guaranteed fair pay for all artisans and employees, the implementation of vital feeding programmes at her production house, and the deliberate crafting of timeless, appealing pieces that attract a broader audience, thereby ensuring consumers are motivated to continually support and invest in her sustainable business model.

This ethical mission is made all the more urgent by a distressing, sad reality: Africa has, regrettably, become a primary dumping ground for the world’s clothing waste. The sheer volume of annual textile waste being illegally or unethically dumped is estimated to be around 11million tons—a staggering figure that constitutes a severe environmental and social crisis. This grim fact behoves us all, as africans and global citizens, to take immediate and collective action to combat and alleviate the pervasive problem of fashion pollution. Eki Kéré stands as a compelling model of how fashion can and must be part of the solution, demonstrating that beauty, culture, and sustainability can be woven together into a truly meaningful product.
