Fashion Friday: Thebe Magugu’s new Tsolo dress stars Zozibini Tunzi and Simphiwe Dana

Thebe Magugu is bringing the Eastern Cape into focus with his latest fashion story, with Zozibini Tunzi and Simphiwe Dana at the centre of his newest campaign.The designer’s Tsolo Dress forms part of his Intimate Cartographies project, which explores the relationship between fashion, place and cultural identity.

For this chapter, Magugu turns his attention to Tsolo in the Eastern Cape, using the town and its cultural heritage as inspiration for a contemporary fashion piece.The choice of Zozi and Dana adds another layer to the story. Zozibini, who was born in Tsolo and grew up in nearby Sidwadweni, has a deeply personal connection to the place that inspired the design. The former Miss Universe has also become a significant voice for African representation on the global stage.

Simphiwe Dana, meanwhile, brings her own rich connection to Xhosa culture and storytelling. Through her music, the award-winning artist has consistently explored themes of identity, heritage, history and the African experience.At the centre of the campaign is the Tsolo Dress, a striking silhouette inspired by the graphic banding seen in Xhosa traditional dress. Magugu reimagines those references through a sleek, fitted design, giving the traditional visual language a distinctly modern expression.

The dress is available in black with ivory detailing and in an ochre colourway with black accents. Its design includes a high collar, half-zip neckline, button detailing, sculptural cuffs and a fluted hem. Each dress is also accompanied by an iBhayi shawl.What makes the campaign particularly striking is the way the clothing connects its wearers to a specific sense of place. Rather than simply borrowing from traditional aesthetics, Magugu's approach considers how elements of heritage can be translated into contemporary fashion while retaining their cultural significance.

With Tunzi and Dana as the faces of the Tsolo chapter, the designer brings together beauty, music, fashion and heritage in a story that feels distinctly South African. It is a celebration of where we come from, while offering a fresh perspective on how those cultural references can live in the present.
