Women’s Day: Red Rocket’s powerhouses turn up the energy and purpose

A picture is worth a thousand words, and in a world where women can be anything, these women are fiercely bold, intentional, and they are the powerhouses they think they are. We’re talking about the women of renewable energy company Red Rocket.

In today’s world, sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a necessity for organisations working towards a greener tomorrow for all. Red Rocket has been powering forward with that mission since its inception in 2012 through its impressive contingent of women who are helping advance the energy transition.

The leading Independent Power Producer (IPP) has grown significantly in the past year, and with it, the number of women making it all happen. Boasting 62 women doing groundbreaking work in the construction field, at the negotiating table closing massive transactions, or mapping out the designs of entire wind, hydro, and solar projects, this shows that women aren’t just included, they are running the show.

Jean Wessels, Red Rocket’s Finance Director, said: “Working in a company with such a significant contingent of women is truly inspiring. I firmly believe that women and men bring different, yet equally valuable qualities to the table. It's within this diverse value that the real magic happens. When women own their value and are given opportunities to rise, lead, and be heard, from whichever position they hold, it creates a dynamic and innovative environment," says Jean.

“The amplification of women’s voices means so much more than simply giving women the proverbial ‘seat at the table’. It serves as an example to future generations, demonstrating that genuine progress towards inclusivity can be achieved. The continued amplification is not only important, but essential,” she adds.

In celebrating Women’s Day, the women of Red Rocket once again assembled for a picture-perfect moment sporting their signature red and black – colours that aren’t just a fashion choice, but a brand identity and a mission statement affirming their presence.

Their stories mirror those of iconic women who have etched their names in history, doing extraordinary work to inspire the next generation. Sustainable Investments Director, Magdalena Michalowska Logan, highlighted the empowering quality of being part of an environment where women aren't just present, but leading innovation, steering strategy, and shaping the future.

“At Red Rocket, diversity is more than a principle, it’s a living, breathing force that challenges perspectives, nurtures growth, and ignites meaningful, lasting change,” Magdalena says.

The glamorous assembly at the IPP’s headquarters in Cape Town did not miss a beat, with renowned fashion photographer Nick Boulton stepping behind the lens to capture the group of fearless Red Rocket trailblazers.

With make-up by The Travelling Artist, coupled with gifts and spoils from Catrice Cosmetics, the photoshoot was a special occasion with fine wine by Creation Wines elevating the festivities, bringing a touch of elegance, sophistication, and sensory delight.

The occasion culminated in a special tasting of their award-winning wines and specially curated gifts.

To Renewable Energy Engineer, Gosego Dibate, it is encouraging to see more women represented within the organisation, especially in the energy industry, where this hasn't always been the norm. “It is incredibly empowering to be part of a company where women are not only present but thriving across all levels,” she says.

“Amplifying women’s voices ensures innovation is inclusive, and it paves the way for more young women to see themselves in roles like mine – designing, leading, and reshaping the future of energy,” she adds.

Having joined Red Rocket a year ago, Economic Development and Compliance Manager Cheryl Persensie, who leads Red Rocket’s community development initiatives, said it was not surprising that the company is at the forefront of representation as one of the biggest IPPs in Africa. "With so many women with diverse backgrounds and skills, I believe each one of us has something unique to offer,” she says.

“At Red Rocket, women are supported and provided with opportunities to be change agents and to lead an inclusive, just energy transition,” Cheryl adds.
