Cape Town is getting another chance to experience Internet Athi’s Polymorphism live, this time on one of the city’s most recognisable stages. The musician will perform at Artscape Theatre on Friday, 9 October as part of Voices of the Ages, a three-day concert series bringing together artists across generations.
For Athi, the performance marks his Artscape debut and another stop on the live journey of Polymorphism: Love In All Its Forms. Following a sold-out album launch, the show gives the musician an opportunity to take the world of his debut album into a theatre setting, with the performance centred around the different ways love, connection and identity show up in our lives.
Released earlier this year, Polymorphism introduced audiences to Athi’s distinctive blend of soul, jazz, folk and R&B, with his songwriting often placing intimacy and emotion at the centre. Rather than treating the album as a collection of songs to simply listen to, his live performances have become an extension of the stories within it.
Athi has already taken the project to a number of stages around South Africa, performing at spaces and festivals including the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, Home of Sound Festival in Cape Town, Mzansi Neosoul Picnic in Johannesburg, POTO Jazz Festival in Port St Johns and The One Room in Gqeberha. The Artscape performance now brings the project into a new kind of space, with a larger theatrical setting for the music.
He will be joined on the Voices of the Ages programme by Louis Mhlanga, who performs on 8 October, and Zolani Mahola, who closes the three-day series on 10 October. Each performance offers a different perspective on South African music and the stories that continue to connect audiences across generations.
For those who have followed Athi’s rise from his earlier releases to Polymorphism, the Artscape show is a chance to hear the album in a setting designed for live storytelling, musicianship and atmosphere. And for new listeners, it could be the perfect introduction to an artist whose music is increasingly finding its place on South Africa’s live music circuit.
