How to easily transition from being single to being in a relationship

You’ve been single for years and enjoyed being an independent woman in charge of her own decisions. Now you’re in a relationship for the first time in a long time. How do you make the transition from being single to being part of a couple without losing your independence and your freedom? Let’s take a look.

Create boundaries

If you’re used to getting up at 5am every morning for the gym, there’s no reason why you should stop just because you’re involved. Have a talk about what the non-negotiables are for both of you and you’ll find navigating each other’s schedules a lot easier.

Talk. A lot

Not just talking though – communicating. As a singleton, you won’t have needed to communicate much with yourself, so it’s possible you may have lost the knack over the years. What could seem blindingly obvious to you may not be so apparent to your partner, so make sure to communicate often and effectively in order to make your relationship work.

Make time for me time

Spending time on your own to recharge is just as important as spending time together, so make sure you don’t neglect this, particularly in the first few months of your relationship. If you’re not used to having a significant other in your life, having time by yourself could be just what you need in order to avoid feeling overwhelmed or suffocated.

Be open to change

Your partner doesn’t like reality TV shows. You don’t like pub quizzes. But you want to spend time together and grow your relationship, so that means using the C-word: compromise. You can’t expect to keep your life exactly as it was when you were single, so be prepared to adapt and change your routine in order to accommodate your partner and their needs. It’ll be tricky at first and you may experience some growing pains, but if your newly-found partner is worth the effort, it’ll be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.
