Our favourite moments from past SAFTA’s

Yesterday, media personality Thando Thabethe took to social media to announce that she will return to the Sun City Superbowl this Saturday to host the 12th annual 2018 SAFTA’s She will co-host alongside her fellow broadcaster, Phat Joe. Somizi Mhlongo will also be on the red carpet as well as backstage as part of the McCafé #MomentsInbetween. The Saftas celebrate the crème de la crème of the South African TV and film industry. On the night, 79 awards will be handed out in various categories ranging from TV non-fiction, TV fiction, feature films, short films, to student films. Some of the popular productions featured on the nominee list this year are  Inxeba (The Wound)TjovitjoIsibayaSes’ Top La and  Inumber Number.

So while we prepare ourselves for the awards evening we have rounded up our favourite moments from past SAFTA’s below.

At the 2015 SAFTA’s when Loyiso Gola hosted the awards, it was more of an awkward affair for both him and the guests. In between the breaks, while TV viewers were watching adverts, guests at the SAFTA’s had a whole different experience. When the cameras were rolling, the host was on point, but when the lights went off, he couldn’t even make the audience crack a smile. Instead, he walked around on stage, and uttered to himself (and the audience), ‘this is awkward.’

That time Somizi Mhlongo hijacked his mother, Mary Mhlongo’s special moment on stage. When receiving her award Somizi somehow found a way to bring the spotlight on himself. Once again, proving Somizi loves a little attention.

Jezriel Skrei made history when he won the Best Actor in a Lead Role for  Four Corners. He was just 13-years-old at the time of filming. But he managed to come out victorious against S’dumo Mtshali, Pallance Dladla and Willie Esterhuizen.

Remember that time Bonang Matheba was thought to be the sure winner of the Best TV presenter award? Well, Mbali Mlotshwa who was presenting the award made it very awkward when she kept calling Bonang’s name. Instead, it was  Expresso’s Katlego Maboe who took home the award. This turned out to be one of the night’s most unexpected wins.

While there might be a lot of drama and laughs that happen on stage, the red carpet is one of the most watched moments and the SAFTA’s so check out our favourite starlets!
