South African rapper Riky Rick has died

Musician and fashion icon, Rikhado Makhado, affectionately known as “Riky Rick” has passed away. The news of his passing has sent shock waves through the country.

The Sondela hitmaker is reported to have passed away on Wednesday 23 February. He was 34. The news first broke by Instagram account @maphephandaba. It is alleged that his body was discovered by friends.

The rapper rose to fame when he released his hit single "Nafukwa" in 2014. His album Family Values was certified platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA).

He managed to solidify his presence in the Hip Hop space, and his list of accolades includes the Best Hit Single Award at the Metro FM Awards in 2017.

He also scooped the Best Male Artist, Album of the year for Family Values and Best Remix for Frank Cassino’s Whole Thing at the SA Hip Hop Awards in 2018.

Riky Rick was also influential in the fashion space, receiving a nod from GQ both locally and internationally, positioning himself as a global fashion icon. He will be remembered for his style, music and immense contribution to the culture.

Back in September, Makhado opened up about suffering from anger and depression after the death of his father when he was 18. The star told LAB LIVE podcast that he was on a “destructive path” after losing his dad and battled with “chronic depression.”

The rapper was married to wife Bianca Naidoo and is survived by two children.

The family is yet to release a statement.
