Met Gala 2019: A feast of majestic gowns, frills and feathers

The 71st annual Met Ball took place on 6 May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The ‘Oscars of the fashion world’ is a night of grand red-carpet entrances by the rich and famous.

The Met Gala is the most exclusive invite on the fashion calendar, where the biggest names in film, fashion, music and art gather to raise funds for the Met’s Costume Institute and to celebrate its epic exhibition.

The stylish soirѐe was hosted by fashion diva and US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Serena Williams, Lady Gaga and Harry Styles.

This year’s theme, ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ according to the curator of the Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton was framed around Susan Sontag’s seminal 1964 essay Notes on ‘’Camp’’. Bolton says Sontag’s writings essentially argued that camp is the “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration... style at the expense of content... the triumph of the epicene style. Clothes, furniture, all the elements of visual décor, for instance, make up a large part of camp.”

So yes, it was all (super extra) razzmatazz featuring frills, things (such as bananas, afro combs, picture frames), feathers galore and fairy tale gowns.
