From Nicola Peltz to Ariana Grande, these are the most popular wedding dress styles of 2022

The modern royalty that is Brooklyn Beckham and actress Nicola Peltz tied the knot this weekend in a lavish wedding fit for the young power couple and symbolized the union of their affluent family empires.

While Nicola’s film roles may be limited, she is no stranger to the spotlight and Hollywood’s elite. The 27-year-old’s father, Nelson Peltz, is a billionaire businessman while her mother, Caludia, is a former model.

The Transformers star is frequently spotted at red carpet events, sitting front row at fashion shows and mingling with the in-crowd of music, film, and fashion.

If her Instagram is anything to go by, she has personal relationships with multiple designers, including Pierpaolo Piccioli from the house of Valentino. For her special day, Piccioli was chosen to design the star’s wedding gown - a traditional-with-a-twist trumpet style gown complete with dramatic veil and intricate lace gloves.

According to global online search data analysed by Vera Clinic, Nicola’s Trumpet style gown is currently the fourth most searched wedding gown style of 2022.

Interestingly, Mermaid, Ballgown and A-line styles also topped the list. Here’s a roundup of the most popular wedding dress styles searched for online, and the celebrities who wore them:

1. Mermaid

Global searches: 89 300

By far, the most talked about wedding dress is the mermaid style. With a figure-hugging bodice and a skirt that flares out below the knee, this cut flatters any body type. The name of the dress comes from the flaring of the skirt as it makes you look (and feel) like a beautiful mermaid.

Kate Middleton wore a very similar style of dress when she wed Prince William back in 2011. However, over ten years later this unique dress style still garners attention and has been looked up online a whopping 89,300 times! So if you’re looking for a wedding dress that will stand the test of time, it’s definitely worth looking into a mermaid gown.

2. Ballgown

Global searches: 44 100

If you’re dreaming of a princess-worthy wedding dress complete with all the frills and fancies, then a ballgown is the one for you. Ballgowns typically have a beautiful fitted bodice and are characterised by their big, poofy, flared skirt.

Even celebs can’t resist them, with Chrissy Teigen dazzling in her Vera Wang princess dress. Her bodice was completed with a sweetheart neckline and the skirt featured layers of tulle. For the drama queen in you, ballgowns are captivating dramatic.

Global searches: 21,700

A-line wedding dresses are one of the most popular cuts of dress as they accentuate your waist and have a flared skirt to create a gorgeous silhouette. This style of dress has received 21,700 online searches alone, which is nearly double the amount of the popular trumpet dress. A-line dresses are also a common choice amongst celebrities, with the likes of Hailey Beiber donning a striking one of a kind dress designed by the late Virgil Abloh. Featuring long sleeves and a complete bare shoulder look, her a-line gown was breathtaking.

4. Trumpet

Global searches: 11 700

Trumpet dresses flare out at the hips to elongate your stature and help you not become too swamped in the skirt. These dresses can be quite understated and follow more vintage styles, or they can be more modern and have lacy, bejewelled finishes. Due to the number of different ways a trumpet dress can look uptop, their flourishing in the wedding industry and they’ve racked up 11,700 views online!

If you’re looking for something a little bit more form fitting, a sheath dress might the option for you.

By following the natural curves of your body, these dresses offer a sleek but figure hugging design that barely touches the ground, so you can move about your day with ease.

Priyanka Chopra is one celeb who really nailed this style. For her wedding to Nick Jonas in 2017, Chopra wowed friends and family in a gorgeous Ralph Luaren sheath dress covered in Swarovski crystals. Online interest in sheath dresses continue to grow, with searches reaching 11,600 in 2022.
