For Nicola Mentor, that question quietly became the foundation of HEIR Studios - a media company that explores luxury, entrepreneurship and editorial storytelling through a belief in stewardship.
Raised in Table View with the Atlantic coastline as her backyard, Mentor learned to value beauty, craft and the stories embedded in people and places. Now based in Paarl, she lives amid a different inheritance: a landscape shaped by heritage, skilled hands and businesses passed down through generations.
“Living here reminded me that we inherit far more than our names,” she says. “We inherit a responsibility.” That conviction is the heartbeat of HEIR.
Mentor’s career began in marketing, content creation and talent management, but her questions changed. She grew less curious about capturing attention and more interested in how brands earn trust, build culture and stay meaningful across time. Her interest in heritage businesses deepened while completing the Inside LVMH certificate, where she studied how revered luxury houses preserve excellence while evolving without losing identity.
The editorial photography for this feature was shot at Morea House in Camps Bay. Its calm architecture and quiet luxury mirror the atmosphere Mentor hopes HEIR will cultivate. Floral styling by Adene’s Farm Flowers adds a subtle, tactile warmth.
At the core of Mentor’s work is a deeper conviction: nothing she has belongs to her alone. “Every opportunity, relationship and creative gift has first been entrusted to me by God,” she says. “My responsibility is to steward each one with integrity, excellence and genuine love for people.”
She credits her church family at Jesus Celebration International for encouraging excellence while keeping identity before achievement.
As HEIR Studios prepares to launch HEIR Journal and original founder storytelling projects, one belief guides every decision: we don’t own legacy. We steward it.
“HEIR exists because the greatest legacy we can leave isn’t our own name — it’s the lives we honor and the God we glorify through our work.”
Building what deserves to endure
Some businesses are built for growth. Others are built for generations.
For Nicola Mentor, the founder of HEIR Studios, success has never been measured by visibility alone. Instead, she has become fascinated by the institutions that continue to shape culture long after the people who founded them have stepped away.
It is this fascination that gave rise to HEIR Studios, an emerging media company dedicated to founder storytelling, luxury hospitality, editorial publishing and creative strategy.
Raised in Table View and now based in Paarl, Mentor's perspective has been shaped by two very different landscapes. Cape Town nurtured an appreciation for beauty and creativity, while Paarl deepened her understanding of heritage, craftsmanship and the responsibility of preserving what previous generations have built.
We don't own legacy, we steward it
That belief has become the guiding philosophy behind HEIR Studios.
Rather than simply producing campaigns, Mentor hopes to create work that contributes to the long-term identity of the businesses she partners with. Whether documenting a founder's journey, photographing a heritage property or developing editorial publications, her aim is always the same: to preserve stories worth remembering.
Her appreciation for enduring brands was further shaped through completing the Inside LVMH certificate, where she explored how some of the world's most respected luxury houses continue to balance innovation with timeless craftsmanship.
The editorial imagery accompanying this feature was captured at Morea House in Camps Bay, whose quiet elegance and thoughtful design mirror the atmosphere Mentor hopes to cultivate through HEIR. Floral styling was generously provided by Adene's Farm Flowers.Behind every creative decision, however, lies a deeper conviction.
"I believe every opportunity has first been entrusted to me by God. My responsibility is not simply to create beautiful work, but to steward every relationship and every story with integrity, excellence and genuine love for people."
As HEIR Studios prepares to launch HEIR Journal, Mentor remains committed to one simple belief:
"The greatest legacy we can leave isn't our own name - it's the lives we honor and the God we glorify through our work."
