‘Why Did I Get Married Again?’ Has viewers asking: Did we really need another one?

There are some movie franchises that feel like old friends, even when those friends arrive with a fresh set of problems. Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again? is exactly that kind of reunion. The third instalment landed on Netflix on 9 September, bringing back several familiar faces from the franchise and introducing a younger generation ready to inherit their parents’ relationship drama.

For anyone who remembers the original Why Did I Get Married?, the franchise has always been about more than simply asking whether people should stay married. The first film, released in 2007, followed four couples confronting the cracks in their relationships during a getaway. The 2010 sequel took the same group to the Bahamas, where their relationships were pushed even further, with some devastating consequences.

This time around, everyone reunites in Italy for the wedding of Jasmine, the daughter of Angela and Marcus. But, naturally, a Tyler Perry wedding is never just a wedding. The gathering brings old friends, new relationships, family expectations and unresolved issues into one very glamorous setting. The twist is that the older generation begins to recognise familiar patterns in their now-grown children, forcing them to consider whether they actually set the right example.

The film also brings back much of the original cast, including Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Sharon Leal and Lamman Rucker, while Taraji P. Henson joins the story as Roselyn. And while there is something undeniably fun about seeing these characters together again, the public reaction has been a little more complicated. Some viewers came for the nostalgia, the familiar faces and the trademark Tyler Perry drama, while others have questioned the storyline, pacing and whether the franchise needed another chapter at all.

Critics have also been less than enthusiastic about the film's crowded plot and dialogue. But then again, isn't this part of the Tyler Perry experience? There is always something to discuss, from questionable decisions and complicated relationships to the characters who have you yelling at your screen.
