Following the successful debut of the Orlando Pirates-themed rooms at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Johannesburg, Marriott Bonvoy is now bringing the magic to the Mother City.

So when the Protea Hotel Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge invited me to experience their new Orlando Pirates-themed room, I expected a museum-style setup—maybe a few balls scattered around and some posters. Fun? Sure. Comfortable? Questionable. But as a sports fanatic, it was an easy yes.

From the moment I arrived, one thing stood out, the location! Just steps away from the V&A Waterfront, with Table Mountain in view, the hotel is nestled in a beautifully restored 19th-century building. It's where history meets modern luxury, think stylish rooms, a serene spa, state-of-the-art conference spaces, and unbeatable access to Cape Town’s top spots. Basically, it's got that Glamour girl on the go seal of approval.

Check-in? Seamless. Walking to my room, I was struck by historical nods throughout the interior, most notably, poignant imagery of Nelson Mandela. But nothing prepared me for what was behind that door.

It’s a Pirates fan’s dream, reimagined. Not kitsch. Not overdone. Just cool, curated design that pays homage to one of South Africa’s most iconic football clubs. From the bespoke bedding to the statement cushions, monochrome detailing, and the display pieces; a signed jersey, soccer boots, a vuvuzela, and a bold mural, it’s a love letter to the champs, wrapped in plush comfort.

Naturally, I called up a fellow soccer enthusiast to share the moment. His reaction? Pure awe. Like me, he expected something far more literal, but was blown away by the thoughtful design. It’s that element of surprise that makes this stay unforgettable.

Let’s be honest: this is one of those rare finds that you want to keep to yourself but it’s too good not to share. So yes, I reluctantly honoured my check-out, but I’m already planning my return.
