What's on in Cape Town this First Thursday, and tips for first-timers

We’re in the second day of Spring, and Cape Town is kicking off the new season the way it knows best: with another First Thursday.

On 3 September, the CBD will once again stay awake well past office hours as galleries, restaurants, bars and creative spaces open their doors for an evening of art, music, food and the kind of spontaneous plans that tend to make First Thursdays so much fun. The official programme runs from 5pm to 8pm, although plenty of venues will keep things going much later.

Start with some art

At The Artists Gallery Cape Town on Bree Street, Textura Animae – Texture of the Soul presents a solo exhibition by Stephen Symons. The digital portraits are built from more than 100 layers and reimagine figures connected to African history through a contemporary lens.

Over on Loop Street, 99 Loop Gallery is showing Three-Part Play, bringing together the work of Xanthe Scout Lardner-Burke, Pia Truscott and Daniel Tucker. The exhibition explores what can happen when three individual artistic practices develop through ongoing conversation and critique.

For live music and dancing

If your First Thursday plans tend to move from art to music fairly quickly, Harringtons Cocktail Lounge is launching its SoulFlo Sessions and Thrift Market. Expect jazz, funk, neo-soul and Afro sounds, with a guest band kicking things off at 7pm before the stage opens for a live jam session. Entry is free before 10pm.

Later in the evening, SURFA ROSA is hosting another Fuzznights takeover, with vinyl and digital DJs carrying the party from 9pm until 3am.

Sip something new

Wine lovers can head to Ongetem for a First Thursdays wine education tasting. Meanwhile, those looking for something a little more fashion-focused can stop by Rosey & Vittori for its Club Capri-inspired summer launch, complete with fashion, music and drinks.

Good to know

To make the most of First Thursday in Cape Town, plan a flexible walking route around the CBD (mainly Bree and Loop Streets) where most art galleries and restaurants are located. Things kick off around 5pm – 6pm.

First Thursday tips:

Book a dinner spot: Popular restaurants and bars get incredibly busy. Booking in advance is highly recommended.

Opt for an Uber: Parking in the city center is almost non-existent on these nights. Making use of e-hailing services allows you to enjoy your night without stressing about traffic or parking.

Keep it casual: There’s no dress code, but dress comfortable and weather-appropriate. You'll be doing a lot of walking and standing.

Stay alert: The crowds are prime hunting grounds for pickpockets. Keep your bags securely zipped and avoid waving your valuables around while walking in large groups.
