If you've spent any time on BeautyTok lately, you've probably come across the term lip contour. At first glance, it may seem like just another name for lip liner, but beauty enthusiasts and makeup artists insist there's a difference. So, is lip contour simply a rebrand of an old favourite, or is it actually a separate makeup category?
As beauty trends continue to evolve, products designed specifically for sculpting and defining the lips are becoming increasingly popular. Here's everything you need to know about lip contour, lip liner and how each can elevate your lip combo.
Lip liner vs lip contour. What's the difference?
Lip liner is a makeup staple that's been around for decades and is typically formulated with a firmer texture, allowing for precise application. Lip liners come in a wide range of shades, from natural nudes to bold reds, making them versatile enough to pair with virtually any lip colour. While lip liner can be used to subtly overline the lips, its primary purpose is definition.
On the other hand, lip contour takes lip definition a step further. Inspired by facial contouring techniques, lip contour products are designed to create depth, dimension and the illusion of fuller lips. Unlike traditional lip liners, lip contour shades are usually cooler-toned and slightly darker than your natural lip colour. Rather than simply tracing the lip line, they're often blended around the perimeter of the lips to create soft shadows that mimic natural volume.
Many newer lip contour products also feature creamier, more blendable formulas, making them ideal for achieving a diffused, sculpted effect rather than a sharp outline you would typically get when using lip liner.

How to contour your lips
- Choose a creamy lip liner (cool or warm-toned) that is one to two shades darker than your natural lip colour.
- Lightly overline just outside your natural lip line at the cupid's bow and the center of your bottom lip.
- For the sides of your mouth, trace exactly inside or directly on your natural lip line to keep the look natural.
- Use your finger or a small, dense lip brush to lightly diffuse and smudge the inner edges of the lip liner. You want a soft gradient
- Finish the look by applying a clear or shimmering lip gloss across your lips. The light reflection from the gloss will immediately enhance the illusion of volume.

Despite the buzz, lip contour isn't replacing lip liner anytime soon. Instead, it's becoming an additional step for beauty lovers who want a more sculpted, dimensional lip look. Of course it's not necessary to get both products. For everyday makeup, a good lip liner can easily double as a contour product, especially if you choose a shade that's slightly deeper than your natural lip colour.
