Known for her soothing sounds, songstress Zoe Modiga has just dropped new music. Having dropped the first two tracks titled, “Little Girl” and “Invisibility Cloak,” accompanied by striking visuals on her IG page, fans are already lapping it up.
Leading up to the release of her album, Zoe Modiga hosted an intimate session at the Market Theatre in collaboration with Afriderm. Her electrifying energy filled the space, letting us in on her creative process and sharing her journey to becoming. The session felt deeply personal as she paid homage to the roots that birthed her. As fellow National School of the Arts alumni, there was a common thread that connected us to a space where artists share so much of themselves.
Zoe’s vulnerability invited the audience to lean in and immerse themselves in the experience, which also felt deeply grounded and spiritual. Taking us on a journey, donning a space suit, she referred to the curated space as a spaceship, with her band ready for takeoff. The journey started off on a soulful note alongside her guitarist, Ray Green, AKA "Sting Ray", before picking up the tempo. Her vocals felt like a hug after a long day, reassuring us that everything would be okay.
The performance was followed by an equally moving set alongside a harpist. Zoe shared her heart with the audience, and her impressive range occupied the blank spaces. A common thread in her songs is bloom, as she makes reference to nature. “I Want Something New” shifted the atmosphere completely as she commanded the stage, she didn’t hold back. There was also a singalong moment, which added a fun and playful vibe to the evening. Taking a moment to speak to the audience, she said, “I know we all carry stories… of joy, victory, pain, pulling through something, so well done to each and every single one of you for making it through everything you’ve been through.” Breaking into a celebratory song, “We say, cheers! You did it! Cheers! We’re happy for you! Cheers! You’ve won!”
Expanding on her offering, she said, “This is an album that seeks to be a domino effect for every single one of us having this very weird and wonderful experience to just jump in. And if you get nothing from these disco balls, world-class musicians, and this incredible team that has helped to put this together, please just remember to jump in. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t make sense. We don’t know, maybe you’re sowing seeds for people who aren’t here yet, and they need you too, so do that!” And in the spirit of sowing seeds, she introduced the next song, titled “Legendary.”
Further affirming that when the album was made, it was necessary to bring this song into the fold, she described it as “created at a time where nothing mattered, except being exactly who you are.” This was in reference to a song she wrote in grade school as a music student at the National School of the Arts. A full-circle milestone, considering the magnitude of the moment, as she unlocks The Vault.
