Underwear: it’s the foundation of your daily comfort, yet we rarely think about when it needs to be replaced. Unlike outerwear, which shows visible wear, underwear quietly endures countless washes, stretches, and wear-and-tear, until it doesn’t. So how do you know when it’s truly time to throw away your undergarments? Here’s a guide.
The elastic has had enough
The first clue is often in the waistband. If your underwear slides down, loses shape, or leaves marks on your skin, it’s a clear sign the elastic is worn out. Even if the fabric looks fine, a sagging waistband means the garment is no longer supporting you properly.
Fabric fatigue
Over time, cotton, lace, and synthetic blends lose their strength. Holes, thinning material, or fraying seams are not just unsightly, they can be unhygienic. If you notice threads pulling or small tears, it’s safer and more comfortable to retire them.
Persistent odour
Underwear endures the most intimate exposure to sweat and bacteria. If washing no longer eliminates odors, it’s time to part ways. Lingering smells indicate bacteria may have set into the fibers, which can cause skin irritation or infections.
Stains that won’t quit
Accidents happen, but if you notice stains that don’t come out no matter how many washes you try, it’s a sign your underwear has served its purpose. Keeping stained garments may not only affect hygiene but also your confidence.

Out of style or comfort
Sometimes it’s not about wear but fit. If your underwear no longer feels comfortable or doesn’t suit your style, it’s okay to let go. Life is too short to wear underwear that pinches, rides up, or makes you feel less than your best.
Regular rotation matters
Even the most durable underwear has a lifespan of roughly 6–12 months for everyday wear. Rotating your collection ensures that no single pair wears out prematurely and that you always have fresh, supportive options available.
NB: Treat yourself to new underwear when you discard old pairs, it’s a small, daily luxury that pays off in comfort and confidence.
