The viral return of bootleg jeans

You’re not hallucinating, bootleg jeans are back, baby, and we’re here for it. At a recent Superbowl performance, rapper Kendrick Lamar broke the internet when he performed wearing a pair of women’s Bootleg Celine jeans paired with a Martine Rose varsity jacket. According to reports, these jeans completely sold out online and even similar versions were nowhere to be found after the show. People took to social media to share their frustration at not being able to secure a pair. Rumour has it this particular pair was meant for another Hollywood A-Lister. I’ll give you a hint: he is currently dating a Jenner sister and, no, it’s not the leggy model. According to Launchmetrics’ Media Impact Value (MIV) measure, they were able to quantify the impact of this moment and results revealed an MIV of $2 million for the French brand. Whether or not you’re a fan of this particular jeans trend, there’s no denying that it’s back with a bang.

One of my favourite models, Bella Hadid, has been embracing this silhouette in a high- waisted version since dating her real-life cowboy Adan Banuelos and becoming a fully fledged member of the Equestrian set by competing professionally. Fitted shirts, cowboy hats and boots paired with these jeans have been her go-to look, and we are here for it. Meghan Sussex, who famously married her Prince H (as she affectionately refers to him on her Netflix show), was also seen wearing these jeans to the Invictus Games alongside Prince Harry. She paired them with a knit sweater and a blazer for a chic, polished look. And for more proof of their longevity, my favourite Friends cast member, Jennifer Aniston, has worn this silhouette on and off for years.

Our obsession with this 2000s fashion trend has found its way onto the runways with Chloe being a large proponent of the aesthetic, offering their styling tips that lean heavily towards the boho aesthetic styled with a ruffled blouse and penny lane coat. I personally am more excited about the return of this silhouette rather than the skinny version that we’ve been told is on its way back into our lives, much to my chagrin. I clearly remember rocking them, as did some of the biggest pop stars including Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child, Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus in her Hannah Montana heyday. My personal fashion styling tip would be to wear them with a slightly oversized blazer for a more current look and stick  to a cowboy boot or simply a stiletto-heeled pointy boot.

And since we’re stepping into winter, don’t forget to throw on your favourite coat; mine would be a classic trench. I would play around with a few top options such as a crisp white shirt or even a denim shirt to emulate the Canadian tuxedo (all-denim) look for a polished and sophisticated ensemble. Or add a classic round-neck T-shirt and you’re good to go. For a more relaxed look, add a pair of retro sneakers.
