A new chapter is about to begin for Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) as the institution prepares to unveil its new Artistic Director following an extensive international search.The announcement comes at a defining moment for Africa's leading museum dedicated to contemporary art from the continent and its diaspora. It also follows the passing of the museum's Executive Director and Chief Curator, Koyo Kouoh, whose visionary leadership helped transform Zeitz MOCAA into one of the world's most influential contemporary art institutions.
The media introduction, taking place on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, will officially introduce the museum's new artistic leader, selected by the Board of Trustees after a comprehensive global search. The appointment marks an important milestone as the museum builds on the artistic vision and institutional foundations established over the past decade while looking ahead to its 10th anniversary in 2027.
Kouoh's legacy continues to shape the institution. Since joining Zeitz MOCAA in 2019, the Swiss-Cameroonian curator championed a bold Pan-African vision that centred African voices, artists and narratives. Under her leadership, the museum presented critically acclaimed exhibitions, expanded its educational programmes and strengthened its reputation as a global platform for contemporary African art. Before her passing, she had also been appointed as the first African woman to curate the prestigious 2026 Venice Biennale, cementing her place as one of the most influential figures in the international art world.
Located in Cape Town's iconic Silo District at the V&A Waterfront, Zeitz MOCAA opened in 2017 in a spectacularly reimagined historic grain silo. Today, it remains the largest museum in Africa dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, showcasing groundbreaking exhibitions while fostering research, education and community engagement.The appointment of a new Artistic Director signals more than a leadership transition—it marks the beginning of the museum's next chapter.
