This Heritage Month, two of South Africa's biggest style institutions are joining forces — and the result is nothing short of a love letter to who we are. Meet Lineage, the fashion-and-fragrance collaboration between Woolworths and the country's most exciting design export, Thebe Magugu.
Think of it less as a "collection" and more as a conversation — one where South Africa's many histories, textures and visual dialects finally get to sit at the same table. The vibe? Contrast that clicks. Tradition meets modernity, restraint meets full-volume expression, structure meets freedom — and somehow, it all makes perfect sense together.
Rolling out in three drops from September, Lineage spans womenswear and a covetable signature fragrance, so your wardrobe (and your signature scent) can evolve alongside the story. And this isn't Thebe and Woolworths' first rodeo — the retailer backed him early via StyleBySA, the platform built to spotlight SA's next generation of design talent. But Lineage is the glow-up: the first time the two have gone this big, this immersive, blurring the line between what you wear and how you smell doing it.
"At Woolworths, we believe the most meaningful design tells a story," says Manie Maritz, CEO of Woolworths Fashion, Beauty and Home. "Our relationship with Thebe began at an important stage in his journey, and it's been incredibly rewarding to watch the impact he's made, both locally and internationally. Lineage lets us come together again in a far more expansive way — celebrating South African creativity, honouring our diverse heritage, and bringing Thebe's world to our customers across fashion and beauty."
For Thebe, it's personal. "Woolworths supported my work early in my career, so returning to the relationship in this way feels particularly meaningful," he shares. "With Lineage, we've been able to create a complete world across fashion and fragrance. The collection explores the beauty that emerges when different traditions and histories exist alongside one another, while inviting people to connect with those stories in their own way."
Lineage isn't just a Heritage Month feel-good story — it's a tangible extension of Woolworths' Inclusive Justice Initiative (IJI), which exists to open doors for local producers and creatives across the value chain. Partnering with a South African design powerhouse during the month we celebrate who we are? Chef's kiss timing.
Catch Lineage from 10 September 2026 in selected Woolworths stores and online at woolworths.co.za, where pricing and full product info drop alongside the collection.
Our take: this is the kind of collaboration that reminds you why local really is lekker.
